VoIP systems allow businesses to communicate over the Internet. Switching a company’s telecommunications to running over the internet has so plenty of benefits that we constantly cover on our blog. However, using the Internet creates a new set of audio quality challenges. These are small issues that usually have a simple troubleshooting process to resolve them. Failing to address these challenges can compromise customer relations and slow your business down, so we came up with a list of helpful tips to improve your business VoIP call quality.

Calming the Jitters

VoIP systems deliver voice information in packets, which must be evenly spaced and delivered in a constant stream in order to function properly. Various configuration errors can cause voice packets to arrive out of order, which means scrambled audio that’s not hard to understand. We call this jitter.

Dealing with jitter depends on the severity of the problem. For minor jitter, you can replace your current Ethernet cable with a Category 6 one, which transfers information more quickly and reduces the likelihood that data will arrive out of order. If it’s really bad, contact your VoIP provider to find a solution.

Considering Contention

A contention ratio measures the difference between the bandwidth available and the maximum possible demand for service. VoIP communications have to compete with other users on the network who are streaming music, watching Netflix, or performing other tasks that use up bandwidth. The more users your business competes with, the lower your call quality.

The easiest way to free up more bandwidth is to purchase an assured contention ratio from your provider. This is expensive, but your business will more than make up for the cost through fewer interruptions and reduced wait times.

Hunt Down a New Headset

Improving VoIP call quality can sometimes be way simpler than you’d think. It’s important not to overlook the simple solutions. For example, if  you make most of your calls over the computer using a softphone, your headset may be responsible for your call quality issues. Cheap headsets come with thin, poorly-insulated cables, reducing audio clarity. Investing in the proper headset can go a long way.
